My story

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, I moved to Halifax and graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Knowing that I wanted to work in a chartered accounting firm, I decided to make the bold move to Toronto to pursue my CA designation and have been a member of the Adams + Miles team since late 1999. I served as an assurance manager for a number of years, before becoming an assurance partner in 2014. I earned my Chartered Accountant designation in 2002. Away from work it’s important to me to pursue my other goal of giving back. I’ve volunteered with a number of organizations both at the board and program level, volunteered abroad and continue to help mentor students training to become Chartered Professional Accountants.

It’s not every day that you can go to work and know that you’re supporting organizations doing transformative work. I’m fortunate that I get to do exactly that as a Partner in our Charities and Not-for-Profit Organization practice. We have the privilege of working with extraordinary people and organizations—from charities to community groups—across the sector. It’s very rewarding to be their partner in mission.

What drives me

I made the choice to mainly serve charities and not-for-profit organizations throughout my accounting career because I felt that it would give me the opportunity to give back to the community in a small way. I soon realized that I could have an outsized impact with my work. I think of it like this: if a not-for-profit organization or a registered charity can rely on A+M to ensure their compliance requirements are met, they can focus on achieving their strategic goals. That’s a win for everyone.

It’s also part of what’s unique about the culture here at A+M. We work to serve our clients’ best interests and make sure we always prioritize their needs. That means listening, delivering added value wherever possible and working to provide an exceptional service experience. We start every engagement by diving into the client’s organization, understanding its workings and using that knowledge to develop a customized assurance, tax or accounting strategy.

We take a similar approach with our team—we listen to their ideas, their concerns and use their input to shape our policies and the vision for the firm. Our people are very important to us and you see that reflected in everything from our hybrid work to our email policies. I really feel we’ve worked hard to create a culture where people feel welcome, appreciated and listened to.
