When Brian Antman joined the Adams + Miles team in 2005, he had some very big shoes to fill. Our former Condominium Group Partner John Warren—who passed away just last year—was at the time planning to retire. John was the leader of that practice and we needed to find an accounting specialist who could manage the role as adeptly as he had. We placed an advertisement in an industry magazine and Brian was one of the CPAs who responded. Those turned out to be some of the best ad dollars we’ve ever spent.
After a series of meetings, phone calls and emails, Brian merged his practice into ours on January 1st, 2006. It was the start of a period of success in one of our fastest-growing practices, to which Brian made indispensable contributions. Fast forward to the present day and that journey with Brian as an Adams + Miles Partner has come to a close. He officially retired on December 31st, 2023.
At the time Brian joined us, he had a thriving for-profit accounting practice where he managed approximately 20 annual condominium audits. As John Warren had years earlier, Brian saw the vast opportunity in the Greater Toronto Area’s burgeoning condo industry. He also understood that Adams + Miles had built a strong reputation in the sector. He slowly took over as Condo Group leader, first servicing condo and non-condo clients, before transferring his non-condo business to various other Adams + Miles partners. At that point, Brian devoted his full attention to our condominium practice—working with condominium corporations, their shared facilities, property management companies and directors—and assumed prominent roles in various industry groups, including the Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario (ACMO) and the Canadian Condominium Institute—Toronto Chapter.
Brian made a concerted effort to give back to the condo community whenever possible. He served as a director and treasurer of CCI Toronto, was a member of the CCI—National Finance and Risk Management Committee and was a Board member of CCI—Huronia Chapter. He also shared his expertise as a presenter at CCI courses, ACMO luncheons, the annual Condominium Conference and by writing various condo-related articles for both CCI Toronto and ACMO. As a recognized leader in the industry, Brian participated in ACMO submissions to the Ontario government on revisions to the Condominium Act, 1998, while acting as an expert witness in condominium disputes.
Over the years, Brian served on Adams + Miles’ management committee and helped manage the transition and implementation of our wider firm merger in 2008. His insights and expertise helped guide us as we gradually expanded the firm, always broadening our condominium industry footprint. We now conduct more than 500 condo audits each year, while providing accounting, tax and other specialized services to condo communities across the GTA. Brian played an integral role in that expansion.
As we celebrate Brian’s 40-plus year career, we want to not only recognize his remarkable professional achievements, but acknowledge his role as a leader and friend. Brian has never been shy to lend support to a colleague or to share his informed insight on a challenging file. His sense of humour and friendly approach brightened our workplace. He made us better as a firm and helped us grow as professionals.
He also helped nurture the family atmosphere that’s defined our culture. A devoted husband—married to Rosalie for more than four decades—father of three and grandfather to five, Brian leads by example. He’s happiest when he’s around his family and he’s helped instill values of friendship, trust, collaboration, mutual respect and caring across our firm.
On behalf of the entire team at Adams + Miles, we wish Brian the very best in retirement.
