Toronto skyline illustrating growth in 2023

Each year we’re proud to celebrate our achievements as a firm—and once again, the Adams + Miles team took some major steps forward. From operations to international networking to overall firm-wide growth, 2023 has been a year to remember.

I want to start by offering a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our clients. You are the backbone of our success and the driving force that motivates our team to constantly innovate and exceed expectations. We’re deeply committed to helping you achieve your financial goals, while standing by your side at every step of your personal or professional journey. That gratitude extends to our many industry partners and our colleagues at AGN International, whose insights, counsel and collaboration have once again helped us expand our potential as a firm.

And of course, none of this year’s success would be possible if it weren’t for the extraordinary efforts of our team. Their dedication to excellence and passion for going above and beyond to meet our clients’ needs is truly inspiring. I can’t wait to see what ideas and new approaches they bring to the firm next year.

They’ll have additional colleagues with whom to collaborate. Over the past few months, we’ve added several new team members, just as we’ve said ‘goodbye’ to others who have retired. This expansion of our staff is intended to drive our firm-wide growth throughout 2024—including in specialty practices such as our Condominium and Charity and Non-Profit Groups—while continuing to enhance our client service experience. Stay tuned for more news on this front in the months ahead.

Condo Group Partner Brian Antman calls it a career

One of the team members who is leaving us this year is Condominium Group Partner Brian Antman. Brian has spent nearly half of his more than 40-year career helping to build our condo practice, which has included working with condominium corporations, their shared facilities, property management companies and directors. Brian has been instrumental in boosting Adams + Miles’ recognition and standing as a leader among condominium industry auditing firms in the Greater Toronto Area. We’ll miss Brian’s expertise, sharp insights and sense of humour, but we’re sure he’ll be back to visit when time allows. His last day with the firm is December 31st, 2023.

As Brian prepares to call it a career, this year we were saddened to learn of the passing of two of our retired partners: Chris Masin and John Warren. Chris was not only a fantastic accountant, but a respected leader, mentor and an engaging presence whose name was synonymous with several previous iterations of our firm: Linton & Masin; Wilson, Masin & McLaren; and Adams, Masin & Tilley. John Warren, who we lost in October, began his tenure at Adams + Miles in general practice before spotting opportunity on the condominium front. His understanding of the burgeoning Toronto condominium sector in the mid-1980s helped lay the foundation for our dedicated condo practice. He would go on to serve as a leader on several condominium-industry boards and industry associations, while acting as a trusted colleague and friend to everyone at our firm. On behalf of our entire team, our thoughts are with the Masin and Warren families this holiday season.

Adams + Miles and AGN International

This was another year that we deepened our ties with our colleagues at AGN International—a worldwide association of independent accounting and advisory businesses that provide assurance, accounting, tax and advisory services across the globe. Our team had the pleasure of serving as the host for the first-ever meeting of Canadian AGN members in Toronto last September. The two-day event covered a range of topics from firm operations to HR opportunities and included a wonderful gala at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum.

That event was followed by my attendance at the AGN World Congress in Tokyo in November. As always, it was a worthwhile gathering where I had the opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices with AGN members from around the world. It also shone a spotlight on the potentially lucrative trade opportunities between Canadian and Japanese companies. We’ll be exploring those possibilities with many Adams + Miles clients in the years ahead.

Earlier in the year, Manager Shudan Zheng achieved her career goal of working abroad when she participated in an exchange with New Zealand AGN member firm Gilligan Sheppard. Our goal as a firm is to facilitate a range of exciting career development opportunities for our staff. Shudan not only had a wonderful workplace experience Down Under, but was able to bring a different perspective and new ideas back to her role when she returned to Canada. In February 2024, Gilligan Sheppard accountant Priti Lata will be making the trip to the Great White North to complete an exchange with Adams + Miles. We can’t wait to welcome her to the team—and we’ll promise her that the February weather is only temporary. Canada does, eventually, get warm!

Celebrating our refreshed brand, a new website and successful CFE exam writers

Sometimes it’s time for a change.

While the previous iteration of the Adams + Miles’ brand identity had served us well for more than a decade, we felt the time was right for an update that better reflected our professional dynamic, the outstanding expertise and experience across our firm and our commitment to service excellence. In January we debuted an updated wordmark, our new monogram logo and a user-friendly website featuring a regularly updated content series designed to keep you informed and a step ahead—all with the goal of helping your organization run more effectively.

The platform also introduced you to our team and offered an easy tool to sign up for our regular e-newsletter. We’re committed to continuing to deliver the content you need to stay successful, so be sure to sign up for our latest news and perspectives.

Lastly, we’d like to extend congratulations to Staff Accountants Samantha Wong and Harneet Kaur, who this year successfully completed the Common Final Examination (CFE). The CFE is the final step to becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant. We’re very proud of Harneet and Samantha’s achievement. Since joining the firm this year, they’ve already made significant contributions and proven to be great additions to the team.

On that note, and on behalf of the entire Adams + Miles family, we’d like to wish you and yours the very best this holiday season, with a bright and prosperous New Year to come.
